‘It would appear,’ explained Sir William Cecil, ‘that the Scottish lords were in favour of disposing of Lord Darnley.’

‘So are they happy with the result then?’ demanded Elizabeth, her face pinched with disgust.

‘No, indeed, your majesty,’ said Sir William, ‘for your cousin appears to have taken up with the Earl of Bothwell, he who is suspected of murdering Darnley, and there are rumours that she will marry him next. She has gone to a house-party where he is known to be staying.’

‘She has gone to a house-party!’ exclaimed the Queen. ‘But her husband has scarcely been dead a week! I cannot credit such idiocy! It cannot be true!’

‘On the contrary,’ said Sir William. ‘It is all too true.’

‘She must have this murder investigated properly,’ said Elizabeth. ‘She needs to clear her name. It is no good trying to turn a blind eye to it. This is urgent. I must write to her at once!’

‘Very good, your majesty,’ said Cecil, ‘but I fear you will be wasting your ink.’
